Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research.

In August 1984, Bharat Ratna Shri. C.Subramanian along with Prof. P.S.Mani Sundaram, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University chaired a Meeting of leading academicians and Industrialists and an idea was born.

The historic date was 22nd March 1890 when Lord Connemara the then Governor of Madras State laid the foundation stone for the present Connemara Pubic Library to fulfill the long felt need for a standard library.
